Staying here shortens a dawn trip, but landing on the cave sand and swimming into the cave are banned, and every visit depends on sea state and the Portimão harbour master's rules.
Carvoeiro: the village base with its own cave boats
Lagoa describes white houses cascading down to Praia do Carvoeiro, where modern boats wait to take groups to the sea caves, and a boardwalk of about 600 m leading to Algar Seco. It is the broader base for meals, evenings and several Algarve days, about 4 km from Benagil in a straight line.
Transport decides more than distance
Estômbar-Lagoa, the nearest station, is about 5.4 km from Carvoeiro and 8.2 km from Benagil in a straight line. Since 19 July 2026 CP runs electric trains along the whole Algarve line, about one every two hours between Faro and Lagos. The last leg is a bus or taxi; AMAL is still tendering a new regional bus contract, so check VAMUS for the network on your date.

Can I walk between Carvoeiro and Benagil?
Yes, on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail: Lagoa's 5.7 km route runs along the cliffs from Vale Centeanes, about 2 km east of lower Carvoeiro by road, to Praia da Marinha and drops to Benagil beach on the way. Lagoa rates it medium; avoid very hot, wet or windy days.
Does staying in Benagil make the cave easier?
Only the transfer. A licensed boat or guided kayak still decides when you go, notice 019/2024 still bans landing on the cave sand and swimming in, and sea state can cancel the trip. Carvoeiro's own boats reach the same caves.
Should I book the stay before the cave activity?
Choose the base from the whole coast itinerary, then book a compliant activity with flexible terms. Do not let one conditional cave slot force an inconvenient stay for every other part of the trip.
