Benagil Cave access rules: what the official notices require
Do not swim to the cave, do not land or remain on the cave sand, and do not use an unguided rented kayak, SUP or other non-motorized craft. Access must follow the current maritime authority rules and any live closure.
Activities the notices prohibit
The official instructions prohibit landing or using the cave's interior sand, swimming or using flotation aids to access the cave, and unguided tours or rentals of non-motorized craft in the regulated area.
How regulated visits move
The notices define separate movement patterns: non-motorized craft use the eastern opening in a single-file entry-and-exit turn, while motorized vessels use the western opening. Visitors must follow their licensed operator and maritime instructions.
Capacity and time are controlled
The 2025 amendment sets simultaneous limits of five motorized vessels and fourteen non-motorized craft, with nominal maximum interior times of two and eight minutes respectively. These are operating limits, not a promise that access will be available.

Can I swim to Benagil Cave from the beach?
Do not build a plan around swimming to the cave. Maritime rules, vessel traffic, currents and live conditions govern access; use the current authority notices and a compliant operator rather than distance seen from shore.
Can visitors land inside Benagil Cave?
Do not assume landing or disembarkation is allowed. The applicable navigation instructions and their amendments control movement in the cave area, and live authority or operator restrictions can be stricter.
Does booking a tour guarantee entry?
No. A responsible operator may alter, delay or cancel when rules, sea state or traffic make the planned movement unsuitable. Treat cave entry as conditional and keep a worthwhile land-based fallback.
